Week 5 NFL Power Rankings

I don’t have a ton of time to get into this week’s rankings, but this is the kind of week that makes me really enjoy doing these. I like that a 1-4 Vikings team is ahead of the 3-2 Bucs, because I really believe that the Vikings have been the better team this year. I like that 49ers are ahead of the Patriots, because I really believe that the Niners have been the more complete team  (remember they are a last-second 48 yard field goal away from being 5-0). I like that the 2-3 Chiefs are behind the 1-4 Panthers because the Chiefs were positively dreadful the first three weeks and barely eeked out a 21-point come-from-behind victory over the Colts this weekend while the Panthers have been extremely competitive in every game and nearly beat both the Packers and the Saints.

I think these rankings do a good job of analyzing each team’s performance and comparing it to the rest of the league. And it’s certainly a hell of a lot better than making it up as you go along.

One other quick note: The reason I include the rankings index is to provide some context for why teams are ranked where they are and where they stand relative to one another. There seems to be a fairly precipitous drop off in the rankings index between 49ers and Patriots, Titans and Raiders, and again with the Seahawks and Jaguars. Perhaps through five weeks we could use the index to sort of explain teams in terms of  which group they fall into. Just something to think about.

Biggers Movers:

  • UP: VIKINGS (26 to 18)
  • DOWN: TITANS (4 to 14)
