Morning Cuts: August 23, 2011

Pirates:

  • The Pirates earned a split in the twinight doubleheader against the Brewers yesterday, winning for the first time this season against their division rival. After getting smoked 8-1 in game one, the Bucs put together a seven run 7th inning in game two to pound the brewers 9-2. (game 1 box, game 2 box).
  • Pat Lackey thinks Clint Hurdle needs to let his players play.
  • After visiting with Dr. James Andrews yesterday, Paul Maholm tweeted that his injury is merely a shoulder strain. There is no timetable for his return.
  • In other injury news the Pirates placed Kevin Correia on the 15-day DL with a strained oblique, and recalled Chris Leroux. It is highly unlikely that Correia is actually injured nearly as much as he is just sucking horribly and the Pirates want to give him some time off without wasting a roster spot.
Steelers:
  • Huge news for the Steelers as it was announced yesterday that Lawrence Timmons agreed to a six-year contract extension with the team worth $50 million. Next up? Troy Polamalu.
  • Guard Trai Essex is back. The o-line is fairly banged up right now and Essex knows the flow of this team as well as any other option. It’s unlikely that he will be anything more than a backup.
  • Is Maurkice Pouncey the next Dermontti Dawson?
Penguins:
Matt Holiday could be out for the remainder of the season after a moth flew into his ear during last night’s game. Only half of that statement is true. Guess which half.
