Morning Cuts: August 20, 2011

This is a post I hope to do every morning with a quick rundown on the prior day’s events and a quick preview of things to come.

  • Bucs drop a heartbreaker to the Reds, 11-8 (box)
  • Jose Tabata is going to be a Pirate for a while. The annual breakdown, thanks to Brian at Raise the Jolly Roger:
    • $500K in 2011 (plus a $1 million signing bonus)
    • $750K in 2012
    • $1 million in 2013
    • $3 million in 2014
    • $4 million in 2015
    • $4.5 million in 2016
    • Club options in 2017, 2018, and 2019 that total $22.5 million (specifics unknown, but that’s an average of $7.5M per year)
  • Neil Walker could also be locked up long-term in the near future.
  • Paul Maholm was placed on the 15-day DL last night due to a left shoulder strain. There is no report on when Maholm suffered the injury. This is Maholm’s first trip to the DL in his career, and it comes at a particularly bad time as he is likely to be a free agent at the end of this season (assuming the Pirates don’t pick up his nearly $10M option). Maholm was slated to start one of the two games of Monday’s twin-bill against the Brewers with Ross Ohlendorf starting the other. The Pirates haven’t made an official roster move yet, and it is likely the Bucs will call upon Brad Lincoln to start in Maholm’s place.
  •  The Pensblog has a picture of the Wilkes-Barre Pens nasty new third jersey.
  • Reds (Willis) vs. Pirates (Morton) at 4:10, for some reason. Hopefully Nick Levya comes down with a cold and can’t make it.
Headline of the day: Brookline manicurist held in fondling case.
